Fifty Years Later

                                                        S.A.Sobhan

May 1 is the fiftieth anniversary of the day when Allah decided to take my beloved father from this world. It was only weeks after the March 25 Pakistani military crackdown in the-then East Pakistan.

In spite of my father being diagnosed with an enlarged heart, living with blood pressure issues and cholesterol, and his bout with pethidine addiction – which also almost killed him – and two previous heart attacks, his passing was unexpected and untimely. It was not only the end of his life, but the end of the carefree life I and my siblings were used to growing up.

Given all his career positions in civil service, his brilliant academic achievements, his school life as captain of his school hockey team, a fervent tennis player, and accomplishments that could be envied by many, he died almost unknown an unrecognized son of Bengal.

The just begun War of Liberation brought planted conditions exploited by his unscrupulous business partners to take full control of Hotel Purbani, which he had sunk his life savings and properties to bring into being. Having suffered financial setbacks, the hotel was economically salvaged by the new partners—only to brutally deprive the orphaned children upon his death.   They were not allowed to occupy any of the 2 houses, each 10 room homes that was owned by Mr Sobhan, as they were used as part of the share capital of the hotel business. Instead his family was kindly given a paltry Tk 1000 monthly for a family of 10 and a rented home to live in.And we were thankful for that. The business partner insisted that the Sobhan houses were the property of the hotel and we, his children had no right to those homes. School fees were stopped the children were taken out of school and were not able to complete their schooling. They also shutdown a running rental car business and all the cars were taken to Momin Motors on the pretext that they were owed to the Bank. This was another way of putting our family in financial constraints. It was how they put the children in a position for selling their Purbani shares to the partner.

Those of us who completed school was a result of their own efforts and good fortune in face of adversity.

The breakup of Pakistan affected our family in many ways. A big part of my father’s career was holding high civil offices in the Central Government including his posting in Karachi as Planning Secretary under President Ayub Khan. Such a senior position was a rarity for a Bengali to hold in a Government then dominated by West Pakistanis.

The tragic circumstances that befell the Sobhan Family was a family of 10 without a home and no known finances. Vehicles from a rental car business, owned apart from the hotel, were confiscated by the hotel partners on the pretext of bank loans. What could have been a source of sustenance for the family was shut down. The Military crackdown put all Bengalis on edge and at risk . It was a time of survival for and uncertainties for all Bengalis. There was not a single person, relative or friend, who cared enough to inquire into the Fate of a family that had just been deprived of everything they had and almost put out on the streets.

I enter the seventieth year of my life on this the fiftieth year of my beloved fathers passing. Embarking now into my Golden Years, I feel the necessity to share some parts of thesobhanfamilyhistory  from my perspective.https://thesobhanfamilystory.blogspot.com/2021/04/fifty-years-later.html As I am childless, it will be up to the rest of my family should someone think it worthwhile to continue our story.

Thanks to Allah's benign Mercy, the Sobhan family members survived and each living their lives to best of their abilities. They were not wiped out in spite of the most trying circumstances. My hope is all will remember our father for the great person he was  and my regret is not having any accomplishments that come even near his shadow.

My Mother's Story

Zaheda – is  the only name known to us of Ammi, our mother. Apparently she was linked to our father’s family tree through our Great Grandfather, Syed Abdul Wahab’s father, Syed Abdul Hye, branching out to a part of the bigger tree. As I am searching for our family tree, if found, will old the answer to this question. Ammi grew up in a house, close to our paternal home at 10/2 Abul Khairat Road, in the Old Town area of Dhaka known as Becharam Dewry.

Her marriage to my father, from what is known to me, was either by his choice or upon the
quest of my grandmother for a grandson who would carry our lineage since Abba was an only son. My half-sister , Farida's mother, passed away untimely and was also an only child. Abba's  previous marriages had not yielded any other children.  Ammi was bethrothed prior to becoming of full age and is considered child marriage, which was, and in many places, is still practiced, though there were laws passed in British India making it illegal. At any rate, Ammi was married at a very young age to Abba and lived in her own home for a few years before moving in with Abba.

Practically being neighbors in the residential area known as Becharam Dewry in Old Dhaka, Ammi and Farida knew each other as kids. It is sad we do not know Ammi's date of birth, but since Farida Apa's birthday is in 1939, Ammi's birth year is likely within a few years of 1939. Ammi passed away in 1979, which would mean she was in her early or mid-forties when she left us. Her life ended tragically while I was in school in Austria, 12000 miles from Dhaka.

Ammi never got the benefit of education. She grew up disadvantaged in more than one-way so it is very easy to blame her for her inability to deal with the obstacles and hardship that haunted us all after Abba's untimely demise in 1971. The extreme hardships we went through even caused serious rifts within the siblings. Ammi sought some form of moral support and security when befriended by a distant cousin of hers. That painful
relationship was sorely and poorly viewed by all. Hardly anyone gave Ammi any refuge from her pain and suffering. Even I am regretfully guilty of failing to understand Ammi's needs at that time. As Allah would have it, I was unable to be by Ammi's bedside when she tragically passed away, drowning in a bathtub. I was told she knocked herself out when she hit her head on the bathtub faucet. To this day, I know in my heart how I loved my mother, but was never able to do anything that would have perhaps been looked back upon today as a consolation for myself, to somehow soothe myself from the anguish I feel for having so miserably failed my mother.

The utter dislike Farida Apa had for Ammi continues with her even today after Ammi has been dead so many years ago.It amazes me to hear Apa still speak so poorly of Ammi. I have extended my hand out in friendship to Apa considering that we are not getting any younger but closer to our golden years. I wish we could let bygones be  bygones,. but some people never change. I have tried hard to understand what drove Ammi and Apa to become so polarized but I never will because of Apa's rigid dislike for Ammi.

I do remember from when I was a young boy, maybe about 6 or 7, I witnessed an event when Abba took the steel almirah from Apa and handed it to Ammi. This was like turning the charge of the household over to Ammi. I do think this was held in a lot of disdain, the feeling of which was so
profound that it embedded dislike in Apa against Ammi. Something that festered and grew over the years, never to leave her heart, until this day.

Biography of S. A. Sobhan

                                                        Biography
                                                        ========

Syed Abdul Fazal Mohammad Abdus Sobhan
                                                            AKA
                                      S. A. Sobhan     1911  -  1971
      ==========================================================

To the best of my knowledge and belief, Abba was born in Dhaka in the year 1911 A.D. I’m certain of his year of birth as I do remember it from seeing it on his passport.

There is a lot to be told about our father, often with our chests bloated with pride. He was the only son of our grandfather, Syed Abdul Wahab , who I was told was the son of Syed Abdul Hye and a Court Judge in Calcutta during King George VI's rule, son of King George V and grandson of Queen Victoria. Abba was orphaned at the age of seven and raised by his uncle. The Syed family tree dates back at least two centuries. The last remnant of the actual family tree was in the possession of a relative whom we knew as Alamgir Nana, who is also deceased.  I have seen it but Alamgir Nana never made a copy of it. In all fairness to Alamgir Nana, the size of the document was about 3' by 5' and would not fit a copy machine !

He was not only brilliant but also physically active being the Captain of his High School hockey team and later Tennis champion at the Presidency College in Calcutta. He was a sharpshooter and recognized marksman, with the uncanny skill of shooting a cigarette butt off his wife’s hand from twenty paces. He was awarded a six-shot 38-caliber Webley-Scott revolver with lifetime license by the British Government as a recognition of his marksmanship.

I’m not sure what his first job was, but my knowledge of his earliest occupation was serving as a Civil Defense Officer during World War II. His job was to protect civilian life during the air raids. After the War he was stationed in the District of Noakhali, and held the distinct honor of raising the Pakistan flag when partition took place on August 14, 1947. He told me he met Mahatma Gandhi when Gandhiji visited Noakhali,  being one of the worst riot-stricken regions in Bengal.

Between 1947 and 1952 Abba apparently lived between Noakhali and Faridpur since  Salim was born in January of 1951 , Nayeem was born in November of the same year (they are separated by 10 months according to Ammi) and Nasim was born the following year. Nanchu and Meher were born in Karachi In 1956 and 1957 respectively. Then came Jinnah and Glory, both born in Dhaka in 1958 and 1959. Rukhsana, Munna and Nannie were  also all born in Karachi in the years 1961, 1962 and 1966 respectively. I am quite certain of the years of birth of the first three and don’t believe too far off for the rest of us.

The flip-flopping of our cities of birth was the result of continuous changes of Abba’s venues of service between East and West Pakistan.  After the break-up of British India into India and Pakistan in 1947, Abba was absorbed in to the Civil Service of Pakistan. The CSP designation was an honored classification for civilian employees, with only a handful qualifying for those positions coming from East Pakistan.

After 1947, Abba served as Deputy Commissioner in the Districts of Faridpur and Noakhali. After these assignments in East Pakistan, he was appointed as Deputy Secretary for the Ministry of Defense in 1955 and for the first time stationed in Karachi, West Pakistan, where we lived in Defense Housing Society. At this juncture the only children he had were his oldest daughter, Farida Fatima, myself, Nayeem and Nasim. Nanchu and Meher were apparently born between the years of 1955 and 1957 because in 1958 he was back in Dhaka to serve as Development Commissioner for East Pakistan. We lived a couple of years in the-then Governors House compound. Jinnah and Glory were born in those two years.

At the Ministry of Finance - Govt.of Pakistan

In 1960, Abba was transferred back to Karachi. This time as Joint Secretary, Ministry of Finance and after a few months re-positioned as Joint Secretary, Ministry of Industries. Growing more powerful in the Government of Pakistan, Pakistani Industrialists, particularly textile mill owners crowded his office for licensing permissions. They deluged him with gifts often sent directly to our house. From bales of sample clothing and even bicycles, there was evidently little that Abba could have asked for and not been given by them. But Abba was not only a proud man who held his head up high, but also a man of immaculate honesty.  His integrity was never for sale.

In 1961 he went back to Dhaka as Additional Chief Secretary for East Pakistan, with government housing at 8/A Minto Road, known for its residences for senior government officials. This was a shorter, year-long assignment before being transferred back to Karachi to an even higher position as Secretary in the Planning Division of the Government of Pakistan, with his office next to President Ayub Khan at the President’s Secretariat. In this capacity, Abba was the highest serving civilian Bengali in the Pakistan Government which had been historically predominantly run by West Pakistanis. This was considered critical enough by the Government for him to be provided with armed 24-7 bodyguards. This was Abba’s last position with the Government of Pakistan. He officially retired in 1966 due to failing health after two heart attacks and acute financial pressures from the mishandled hotel business he had established in Dhaka in between 1960 and 1962.

During the years of Abba’s tenure as Joint Secretary, Ministry of Industries and Secretary, Planning Division, Abba was frequently  sent in trade delegations countries including France, Germany, Japan and Thailand to finalize trade agreements.

         Pakistan Trade Delegation to Japan

Prior to his retirement years in Karachi, he was appointed to the Board of Governors for the World Bank.

As Alternate Governor for IBRD-IDA (International Bank of Reconstruction and Development-International Development Association),subsidiaries of the World Bank – and represented Pakistan at the annual IBRD-IDA, he addressed the meeting held in Washington DC on September 30, 1963. This session was welcomed by John F. Kennedy , then President of the United States. The worldwide significance of this meeting was emphasized by JFK  by his words :

“…There is no more important group, it seems to me, in the free world than you gentlemen who are here; no group it seems to me bears greater responsibility. If you are able to conduct your affairs with success, it benefits all of the people all around the globe, and therefore we regard this meeting as perhaps the most important that takes place in our capital this year….”

JFK was assassinated 52 days later on November 22, 1963.

On May 1, 1971 Abba passed away after his third heart attack. His failing health was severely aggravated by financial conditions resulting from what appeared to have been a cloak and dagger conspiracy of his closest “friends” and family. The mental agony from the surrounding blood-bath in Dhaka that took place on March 25, 1971 performed by the Occupation Army probably contributed equally to Abba’s untimely demise. He exhaled his last breath in my arms. His last words were “I’m sorry my son”.

Early life achievements

                                   Earlier life activities and achievements

As he told me, during his high school years, he was known as“Syed Mohammad” likely when he was captain of the field hockey team. Later during his twenties, he was addressed as “Abdus Sobhan”.During this time, he is said to have had an acting role in a silent-movie in one of the first movies filmed in Dhaka– a fact that was barely known by me, but discovered  in Wikipedia by one of his grand-daughters. I am grateful to Naela for bringing this to light.

Sukumari
Nasrullah, Abdus Sobhan (a male playing the female role)
A silent short film and the first film venture of this region. The screening was private.

The movie was filmed in 1928 and S.A.Sobhan, then known as “Abdus Sobhan”
played the leading role of “SUKUMARI” – the Good Girl. There also were no
females in the movie business, so remarkably, he played the female role. The
production of this movie was sponsored by the-then Nawab family of Dhaka.
(Read more on WIKIPEDIA   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Bangladeshi_films )

Sukumari –The first short film of Bangladesh
At that beginning of the 20th century Calcutta was the bastion of film production with full facilities of artists, technicians and studios. Dhaka was lacking all these facilities. The first film-making process in Bangladeshstarted under the financial help and patronage of the Dhaka Nawab family. In 1927-28, a group of young men of the Dhaka Nawab family stepped forward .As a test case the young boys produced a short film named'Sukumari' (The good girl).

A shot from Sukumari

Sukumari was directed by Ambuj Prasanna Gupta, a high profiled dramatist and an instructor in physical education of Jagannath College. Nawabzadah Nasrullah played the hero role. interestingly, at that time, it was impossible to find an actress. A young man, Syed Abdus Sobhan was chosen to play the heroine. Shooting was done in Dilkusha Garden. Khwaja Azad, a graduate from Aligarh University and Khwaja Ajmal, a noted sportsman, who studied photography, rolled the camera. Those who helped to make this movie were Professor Andalib Sadani of Dhaka University, Syed Abdus Sobhan, Kazi Jalaluddin and others. Their movie was completed by 1928-1929. The test was successful. Upon completion, this was a silent movie of  four reels. Unfortunately the copy of the film was never made available for public viewing. There were a few private screenings.

(More to be added if and when other information is found. Requests are being made to
living relatives and acquaintances who may shed some more light on S.A. Sobhan's
life before the partition of 1947).

Beginnings as an ICS Officer

                        Historical Background of the ICS

                                          (The Indian Civil Service)

The Indian Civil Service was born out of what was the Imperial Civil Service of the British Empire in the 19th century. “Historians often rate the ICS, together with the railway system, the legal system, and the Indian Army,as among the most important legacies of British rule in India” (ask.com/wiki/Indian Civil Service)

The nearly 1000 members of the ICS consisted of 688 British and 322 Indians. Of this total of 322, 101 were muslims and only 5 percent were Bengalis.

S.A.Sobhan was a Bengali officer who, upon partition of India and Pakistan, was absorbed into the Civil Service of Pakistan (CSP) while those that went to India became part of the Indian Civil Service. His last appointment with the Government of Pakistan was Secretary Planning, in the President's Secretariat where he with worked directly with Gen. Mohammad Ayub Khan, then President of Pakistan.

The following is a video that depicts the service life of an Officer of the Indian Civil Service. District Officer was produced  in 1945 by the Information Films of India (IFI), and distributed throughout the British Empire by the Central Film Library, Imperial Institute (London). Ezra Mir, the producer of this film worked both for the IFI and its predecessor the Film Advisory Board from 1940-1946 (the IFI was established in 1943).

                                             The beginning appointments of S.A.Sobhan

Kaler Kontho article on Purbani

This story was published in a local newspaper and was written with incorrect and fabricated information. There is no  mention of the original
founder of Hotel Purbani, my father S.A.Sobhan who obtained  the property from the existing DIT : (Dhaka Improvement Trust).  At the time of it's inception in 1961-1962, as East  Pakistan Hotels  Ltd., he was out of necessity a "sleeping partner" due to his  high civil service appointments with the Government of Pakistan. It was therefore set-up  to be operated by family and friends. Proper investigative journalism would have revealed this information from the archives of the Joint-Stock Registar's Office in  Dhaka. Prior to the infamous military crackdown and tragic events of March 25, 1971, he worked closely as an economic advisor to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who residence was also in our neighborhood.

Dedicated to our beloved parents

                                                     Our Parents

This is the story of a family that went from the glamour, comfort and security that came with wealth , power and influence resulting from one man's career successes to downfall brought about more from betrayal, greed and lies by people surrounding him than his own failing health.

This is a story really past due its time for most of those who could verify or provide feedback, have gone, I pray, to a better place where the evils of this world cannot follow.

As I get closer to my twilight years, which will  be upon me soon, my mental recollections seem to be shaking, Yet, being gifted with the ability of photographic memory that comes with normal people, and I feel above average in this category, I will exert every effort to provide facts and knowledge of events with as much detail and clarity as I am able to.

Of course, nothing can be changed and there is nothing to be gained materially from this narrative, Being the first-born son, I am the forerunner and flagbearer of this family, by  traditional birthright given to the oldest male offspring-- a practice  accepted for centuries without question by many cultures, I hope to bring some honor and recognition to his name, which has been so sadly forgotten.

His full name was Syed Abul Fazal Mohammad Adbus Sobhan, keeping in line with the practice of giving multiple names to people to announce lineage. I do not mean royalty, but more of persons born in the upper tiers of society. For sure, our predecessors were landowners in a part of Bengal known as Comilla. Our forefathers properties bore our family  title "SYED" and was commonly called "SYEDBARI" . A literal translation could be "The House of Syed", much like it was prevalent in England not too long ago.  I do know a member of our family tree had in his possession, a family tree chart that clearly went back three generations. Alamgir Nana passed away several years ago and none of us, ever pursued making a copy of it or any effort for its preservation. In his defense, technology did not exist at that time to be able to copy a 3' x 5 ' document.

                         The Children

S.A.Sobhan was married four times, and only one at at a time.Except for his last marriage, which was to Zaheda, our mother, the other marriages were at the behest of his mother, our Grandmother, who greatly desired a grandson before she passed away. Farida, his oldest daughter was the first to be born to his first wife, but passed away untimely without the chance of another offspring. Two subsequent  wives selected by our grandmother did not bear any children. Salim was the first son to be born in the family, and as soon after birth of the first son, Salim, the other two wives, went their own ways. Based on personal knowledge, one of the wives had lineage to the Nawab family of Dhaka through Baliadi House - an elitist family of that time.

His children, in order of birth :

                                                                           Farida - first-born daughter  -December 1939
